From Canada

While many knew her as a film star and in later years as a devout Catholic, to our family she was simply Aunty Barbara.

She was our Mother’s closest friend from the age of 16 and chosen as my Godmother in 1952. She enjoyed the role and on the rare occasions she visited Canada, one could be assured of a memorable visit.

She always remembered us with her phone calls and Christmas cards.  When our mother passed she was deeply saddened. She turned to the church and her faith for solace and understanding.

My wife and I last saw her in 2013 during a visit to the UK and we spent a day with her. Great memories were shared and as the day progressed we suggested going out for lunch. I asked if there were any local restaurants that she would prefer. She indicated that there were none of merit and so we simply started walking down the street only to find a local family owned Italian dining establishment within two blocks.

Upon entering she spoke to the proprietors in fluent Italian and ordered some soup. The soup had to be prepared properly, you understand. She told the owner that it must be served as a bowl within a bowl of hot water to keep the temperature even while being consumed. He was very gracious and delighted that she spoke his language.

The story provides a small glimpse of a woman who had had a great many experiences and was always interesting to be with and listened to.

As with many others, will we miss her but are grateful for having known her.
